Kevin Grasso reviews Campbell (2023) The basics of verbal aspect in Biblical Greek

Kevin Grasso has begun a multipart series critiquing Constantine Campbell’s (2023) book, The basics of verbal aspect in Biblical Greek, 2nd edition (Amazon) on YouTube.

I was already quite disappointed to see how little work Campbell had put into revising his second edition. Campbell has not expanded his perspective or grown with the field in the 16 years since the first edition was published in 2008. Grasso’s critiques in this first video are precisely correct and biblical studies need to take them seriously.

Biblical studies is overdue for aligning our definitions of aspect, Aktionsart, and tense with the rest of the field of linguistics. It doesn’t help students who are interested in linguistics or advanced language study to be given bad definitions of linguistic terms that only exist for the smallest slice of Ancient Greek language research. It, in fact, does the opposite: it harms them.
