Notes on the NLT Changes

Just looking at the two changes in Ephesians, I was stopped wondering the reason a bit.

The first change is Ephesians 3.9:

Ephesians 3:9

I was chosen to explain to everyone* this mysterious plan that God, the Creator of all things, had kept secret from the beginning.

3:9 Some manuscripts omit to everyone.

I was chosen to explain to everyone* this mysterious plan that God, the Creator of all things, had kept secret from the beginning.

3:9 Some manuscripts do not include to everyone.

(Bold is mine)

What is the point of this change? I don’t understand.

The other change is interesting too. Its in a note as well:

Ephesians 6:18

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.*

6:18 Greek all of God’s holy people.

(again, bold is mine)

This change is good one. It puts the emphasis back on the fact that ἅγιος actually means “holy.” With that said, its a somewhat “TNIV-esk” change – “God’s holy people” is the typical translation of this one. Regardless, though, I like it.
