Thinking about Commentaries

I’m thinking about my next WTS order.

Right now, I think I’m going to go all Gordon Fee:

The First and Second Letters to the Thessalonians (NICNT)

Paul’s Letter to the Philippians (NICNT)

I’ve eyed Philippians for some time now and now that Thessalonians is out…hmmm…it’s just so tempting. Will I give in? I’m not sure. Eventually, but not yet.

I recently preached through Philippians and I found Fee, though I don’t have his commentary and had to go to a library to use it, to be really helpful. I would miss multiple meals to afford Fee’s commentary.

  It would only be a couple meals – and depending on the restaurant & whether you bring your wife, maybe only one meal with some change left over.
  
  I’ve used Fee a number of times, it’s more of an issue that these days very little of my book budget goes toward commentaries – I’d rather have books on linguistics & Greek (preferably both if possible).

    Funny, by your influence, most of my book purchases as of late have been either about greek, about linguistics, or have been commentaries on the Greek text of scripture. But as I have been doing this I have incidentally grown to understand the text better than I would had I simply been multiplying commentaries.

I, too, preached through Philippians a few years ago and found Fee (as usual) to be helpful.

I’ve thought about devoting an entire WTS order to a single author’s works too. Fee sounds like a solid choice. Maybe I’ll think about doing that as well.

I am going to be preaching through Philippians and I will be using Fee’s and a couple of other application, or devotional commentaries as well. But Fee will dominate and be the primary source.

  Robert, might I also recommend Lightfoot, David Alan Black’s discourse analysis of the letter, it’s a journal article and the last chapter of his “Intro to Linguistics for Students of New Testament Greek,” F.F. Bruce, and Barth? These are all freaking awesome.

    don’t forget Moises Silva’s commentary – so fantastic. It may not be comprehensive, but it’s one of the few highly original commentaries on any NT book.

      I haven’t looked at Silva’s. I only have two of his books. His intro to Lexical Semantics and his intro to the LXX.

Fee’s Philippians commentary is fantastic. I really enjoyed it.

I’d love to hear your thoughts about his new commentary on the Thessalonian letters. I have Morris’ and I’m extremely interested to find out the differences. I’m also interested to find out whether or not Fee interacts with Colin Nichol’s monograph From Hope to Despair, specifically related to the Restrainer of 2 Thessalonians 2.

Good recommendations though.
