Film: The Gospel of Mark in Koine Greek

The other Koine Greek website, KoineGreek.com (we have a dash, they don’t), run by Benjamin Kantor has announced the beginning of an impressive film project with the LUMO Project and Faith Comes by Hearing. The film is narrated using the text of the Gospel of Mark with reconstructed Koine Greek phonology as its pronunciation scheme. Chapter 1 of Mark is available on YouTube now:

Kantor has been working hard on materials for second language acquisition materials for Koine Greek. You can read on his site a bit more about how this project came to be:

What is that strange, tortured pronunciation?? It sounds *almost* like a Greek would read it, and the guy has an “accent” of some kind, but it doesn’t really sound like Greek, and he’s really laboring at it!

C’mon! Are you aware that the New Testament is read every single day in Greece as a living language?

What is this *madness* that makes us imagine the Greeks don’t know how to pronounce their own language, and that we can do better?

Yes there were likely different dialects in the ancient world, but one has been standard since at least the 3rd century. Why would you go to Israel to find out how to pronounce Hebrew, but not to Greece to learn how to pronounce Greek?

But at least this isn’t as awful as the one they use in Accordance and on other websites.

  (1) The Gospel of Mark wasn’t written in the 3rd century.
  (2) There is an enormous amount of high quality research on the phonology of Hellenistic and Early Roman Greek. Here is some of it:

  Further, if you were to ask Greeks who are experts in the history of their language, such as the ones who contributed to
  Christidis’s A history of Ancient Greek (English edition 2007)/ Ιστορία της ελληνικής γλώσσας: από τις αρχές έως την ύστερη αρχαιότητα (Greek edition 2001), you would find that the video presents a historically accurate Greek pronunciation for the first century. Evangelos B. Petrounias wrote the chapter on post-classical Greek phonology. The phonology in this video is effectively the same as the phonology Petrounias, a native Greek speaker, describes for the era. In short, the pronunciation in this video is good Greek pronunciation.
