Carl Conrad passed away 2/20/25

Jonathan Robie contacted me this morning to let me know that yesterday Carl Conrad passed away. There won’t be a memorial service, but if you have an memories or tributes to Carl, there is a forum thread at B-Greek dedicated to his memory. I encourage you to share any impact he had on your Greek education there.

Tributes to Carl Conrad

I’ve known and conversed with Carl for nearly 20 years now. He was a mentor and a friend. He encouraged me in studying Greek, but he also challenged, criticized, and critiqued. Carl was a classically trained philologist, but he had a creative and thoughtful mind. He read widely beyond his field and actively stretched himself in reading linguistics that other scholars would balked at. He took new ideas, methods, and modes of analysis seriously and stood them up against his decades of experience of the language data. There are not many people like him left, who have read a widely in Ancient Greek texts, but also was actively engaged with contemporary perspectives.

His kind and critical mind will be missed.

If you had your own memories of Carl, please click on the B-Greek link above and share them there.
