Happy Septuagint Day, Here’s Some Data!

I recently ran a syntax query for places where conjunctions begin the apodosis of a conditional construction. For LXX Day, here’s the Deutero-canon data from that search. There are a couple false hits, but it’s interesting data nonetheless.

CSGLXX-DA  The New Revised Standard Version
Wisd of Sol 13:9 εἰ γὰρ τοσοῦτον ἴσχυσαν εἰδέναι ἵνα δύνωνται στοχάσασθαι τὸν αἰῶνα τὸν τούτων δεσπότην πῶς τάχιον οὐχ εὗρον for if they had the power to know so much that they could investigate the world, how did they fail to find sooner the Lord of these things?
Sirach 8:12 μὴ δανίσῃς ἀνθρώπῳ ἰσχυροτέρῳ σου καὶ ἐὰν δανίσῃς ὡς ἀπολωλεκὼς γίνου Do not lend to one who is stronger than you; but if you do lend anything, count it as a loss.
Sirach 8:13 μὴ ἐγγυήσῃ ὑπὲρ δύναμίν σου καὶ ἐὰν ἐγγυήσῃ ὡς ἀποτίσων φρόντιζε Do not give surety beyond your means; but if you give surety, be prepared to pay.
Sirach 19:14 ἔλεγξον τὸν φίλον μή ποτε οὐκ εἶπεν καὶ εἰ εἴρηκεν ἵνα μὴ δευτερώσῃ Question a neighbor; perhaps he did not say it; or if he said it, so that he may not repeat it.
Jdth 5:20 καὶ νῦν δέσποτα κύριε εἰ μέν ἐστιν ἀγνόημα ἐν τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ καὶ ἁμαρτάνουσιν εἰς τὸν θεὸν αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπισκεψόμεθα ὅτι ἐστὶν ἐν αὐτοῖς σκάνδαλον τοῦτο καὶ ἀναβησόμεθα καὶ ἐκπολεμήσομεν αὐτούς “So now, my master and lord, if there is any oversight in this people and they sin against their God and we find out their offense, then we can go up and defeat them.
Tobit 8:12 καὶ εἶπεν Ἔδνᾳ τῇ γυναικὶ αὐτοῦ Ἀπόστειλον μίαν τῶν παιδισκῶν καὶ εἰδέτωσαν εἰ ζῇ εἰ δὲ μή ἵνα θάψωμεν αὐτὸν καὶ μηδεὶς γνῷ saying, “Send one of the maids and have her go in to see if he is alive. But if he is dead, let us bury him without anyone knowing it.”
2 Macc 4:9 πρὸς δὲ τούτοις ὑπισχνεῖτο καὶ ἕτερα διαγράφειν πεντήκοντα πρὸς τοῖς ἑκατόν ἐὰν ἐπιχορηγηθῇ διὰ τῆς ἐξουσίας αὐτοῦ γυμνάσιον καὶ ἐφηβίαν αὐτῷ συστήσασθαι καὶ τοὺς ἐν Ἰεροσολύμοις Ἀντιοχεῖς ἀναγράψαι In addition to this he promised to pay one hundred fifty more if permission were given to establish by his authority a gymnasium and a body of youth for it, and to enroll the people of Jerusalem as citizens of Antioch.
2 Macc 7:33 εἰ δὲ χάριν ἐπιπλήξεως καὶ παιδίας ὁ ζῶν κύριος ἡμῶν βραχέως ἐπώργισται καὶ πάλιν καταλλαγήσεται τοῖς ἑαυτοῦ δούλοις And if our living Lord is angry for a little while, to rebuke and discipline us, he will again be reconciled with his own servants.
4 Macc 4:7 καὶ τοῦ ἔθνους πρὸς τὸν λόγον σχετλιάσαντος ἀντιλέγοντός τε πάνδεινον εἶναι νομίσαντες εἰ οἱ τὰς παρακαταθήκας πιστεύσαντες τῷ ἱερῷ θησαυρῷ στερηθήσονται ὡς οἷόν τε ἦν ἐκώλυον The people indignantly protested his words, considering it outrageous that those who had committed deposits to the sacred treasury should be deprived of them, and did all that they could to prevent it.
4 Macc 12:4 Τῆς μὲν τῶν ἀδελφῶν σου ἀπονοίας τὸ τέλος ὁρᾷς διὰ γὰρ ἀπείθειαν στρεβλωθέντες τεθνήκασιν σύ εἰ μὲν μὴ πεισθείης τάλας βασανισθεὶς καὶ αὐτὸς τεθνήξῃ πρὸ ὥρας You too, if you do not obey, will be miserably tortured and die before your time,

Perhaps you’ve heard that connectives cannot or should not function in this way. If you have, don’t believe it. They do.
